Five Keys Toward Detoxifying Your Body

To detoxify your body simply means to cleanse your body of any toxins it may be harboring. We know, for instance, that some chemicals and pesticides, or certain fumes we breathe, can be toxic to us. In addition, many of our modern day food choices can create a toxic environment that slowly lowers our overall immunity. The phrase toxic Load refers to the condition of our cells and tissues - the inner terrain - that develops when we consume, year after year, highly processed foods. While the liver and the kidneys are natural detoxifiers, organs whose job is to filter out impurities, there are several other ways to help your body detoxify itself. While some of these ways may be viewed as extreme, such as dialysis or a lengthy juice fast, there are several every day things that can be done to detoxify your body with subtlety and consistency.

Nutrition
No amount of great nutrition in the world will work very well until our body stops receiving the massive amounts of processed and fake foods that create a toxic inner terrain. Fortunately, it's easy to learn what is hard on your body; there are no complex charts to memorize. Rule One: the more processed a substance, the larger the toxic load. Simply examine your weekly intake. Eat less of them. Find healthier substitutes. Or, better yet, drop them altogether.

Select organic, whole, unprocessed foods, whenever possible. Stop eating foods with additives and preservatives. Get your oil needs from olive oil, nuts, seeds, such as flax, psyllium, etc. Slow down or eliminate: processed meat (highly processed beef, chicken, lamb, sausages, pate, luncheon meats, bologna), most seafood (bottom feeders, such as mussels, clams, lobster, highly processed anchovies and sardines), pasteurized dairy (milk, butter, cheese, ice cream, yogurt), processed oil(hydrogenated, lard, canola), flour products (bread, pastries, cookies, cakes, pies, donuts, crackers), caffeine (coffee, black teas), tap water ( use filtered or bottled spring water), alcohol (beer, wine, sake, scotch, gin, vodka), processed sugar (candy, sweets, chocolate), sodas (diet coke, sugared drinks), and fake foods (artificial anything!).

Re-hydrate
Our bodies and our world are both largely composed of water, making water a vitally important element to the human race. Thus, its no surprise that water is a huge factor in overall health, as well as detoxification. Re-hydrating helps detoxification in several ways. First of all, water is a natural appetite suppressant, keeping people from ingesting things, such as fast food meals, that may add toxins to the body. Secondly, water stimulates the kidneys, helping them to do their job of filtering. Water also aids in digestion; without water, digestion can not occur, leaving the intestines without the ability to remove waste.

One of the most important reasons for re-hydrating is the lymph system. The lymph system is the often overlooked set of vessels used to transport metabolic waste out of the body. Drinking water to re-hydrate helps prevent the lymph system from becoming overwhelmed with old, necrotic material.

While it is recommended that the average person drink at least eight glasses of water a day, people often forget to do this, compromising their bodys natural health driven abilities. Some suggest taking your weight in pounds and dividing it in half. This is the number of ounces of water you should drink a day. Buy a bottle, somewhere around the size of a gallon. Fill it each day, and drink it empty each day. It is a great way to measurably know how much water you are using. If you don't have access to spring water, then filter your tap water with a carbon filter.

Brush Your Skin
Brushing your skin may seem like an odd concept, an act that is typically reserved for a head of hair. But, the pores in our skin are often an open doorway to innumerable toxins we may encounter. Because our skin absorbs whats on it, it will absorb any toxins present. Brushing these toxins away, however, can minimize the amount of toxins that enter the body through the pores. Our skin can be considered our largest elimination organ, especially during a change in nutrition. To help this process along, purchase a long handled skin brush and dry-brush your entire body for two or three minutes before bathing or showering each day. It may sting a bit the first few times, but you are conditioning your skin to breathe more. This also improves circulation, releases toxins and stimulates new skin production. For some, wet-brushing while bathing can be just as effective.

Take Alkalinizing Baths
Another good idea is Alkalinizing Baths. For these, toss a cup of sea salt or a cup of baking soda into a bath. Get in and slowly increase the heat until you are sweating. The object is to make the outside water more alkaline than the body and blood itself. It is relaxing, and very powerful when combined with skin brushing.

Do Yoga, Be Yoga
Yoga is one of the best detoxifying exercises you can practice. Because one of the foundations of yoga is breathing, and one of the ways to detoxify yourself is to simply breathe, yoga can teach you correct ways to breathe, giving you the ability to make the most out of every breathe you take. The poses, or asanas, practiced in yoga also aid in detoxification. Freeing the body of restrictions, these asanas stretch muscles and limbs, loosening them and letting the muscles and limbs become more relaxed and nimble, freeing the toxins that muscle knots may harbor. These asanas aid in circulation the circulation of blood is greatly enhanced through flexibility and these poses make you physically and mentally flow better. When things flow correctly, the body rids itself of toxins much more easily.

Yoga also circulates positive thinking, which removes toxins from the body in more ways than one. A person bent on negative thinking will not only perpetuate thoughts laden in toxicity, but they are also more likely to engage in an overall unhealthy lifestyle, a lifestyle that invites impurities rather than fights them. 1. Alternating Supine Leg Walks

Start off by laying on your back with your hands under your buttocks. Lift your legs so they are vertical. Contract your abs so your midsection is tense.

Then, lower 1 leg so your foot is a few inches from the ground. Hold there for about 1 second, then return that leg to the starting position. Alternate which leg you lower.

Try a reps and really try to feel the lower abs working.

2. Supine Reverse Crunches

Start off by laying on your back with your hands under your buttocks. Lift your legs so they are vertical, then bend your knees at a 90 degree angle. Contract your abs so your midsection is tense.

Keeping your knees bent at the same angle, slowly lower them until the back of your feet are a few inches above the ground. Then, bring your knees up towards your chest and really squeeze your abs while doing this.

Repeat.

3. Leg Lifts

Start off by laying on your back with your hands under your buttocks. Lift your legs so they are vertical.

Contract your midsection by engaging the upper abs.

Then, lower both legs so that the back of your feet are right above the ground. After holding that position for a few second, return your legs to the vertical position.

Repeat.

Health And Wholeness

Health and wholeness is a broad category and different people may define it different ways. In this article I will be referring to health and wholeness in the sense of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health and wholeness, with a special emphasis made upon the latter three (emotional, mental, and spiritual). The reason for this special emphasis is you don't necessarily need to be physically perfect in order to be truly healthy and whole.

For example you can be crippled or physically handicapped in some way, maybe blind, or deaf, or lame, or perhaps you are not the perfect physical specimen, not so attractive, maybe overweight or underweight, and still with all these seeming physical imperfections you can yet be healthy and whole when it comes to what really matters. That said, there are still certain laws of health which, if followed, will keep your physical body in good health, and in tune to positive thoughts and healthy emotions which originate from an often untapped spiritual level of being the superconscious mind. More about that later.

now, we all have our physical body to carry around, and some of us seem to mostly live in a survival of the fittest mode (sleep, eat, work, procreate). Others tend to be more emotional. Reasoning and analyzing are the lot of those who have a dominant mental make-up. And still others seem to be more intuitive and susceptible to divine impressions from a higher level of consciousness than that of the conscious or subconscious levels of mind. They live mostly from the spiritual level of being. Lets take a look at each category (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual), beginning with the physical.

When you stop and think about it much of society is geared towards catering to the physical body. Look at all the clothing and shoe stores. There are places where you can have your hair done, or get a pedicure and manicure, and have make-up put on, all for dressing up the physical body. The entire world transportation systems are for getting the physical body from one place to another. every restaurant, or food product imaginable is for the body. Houses and apartments are all shelter for the physical body. Education, college, and money all work in one accord to provide comfort and security and pleasure to the body. Hospitals and doctors are here to repair the body if something goes wrong with it. every imaginable sex practice is out there for the very brief sex pleasure of the body. A very popular body centered emphasis in our day and age is diet and nutrition, weight loss, fitness and bodybuilding programs. I am sure the list goes on. If physical health and perfection is what you desire there is a lot of information out there about how to go about accomplishing this to the very art.

The important thing, as far as health of the physical body goes, is to eat fresh living food (fruit, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts etc.), as well as dairy and meat (in moderation) if you are not a strict vegetarian. Add exercise and fresh air and pure water to all this then you are sure to maintain physical health. But remember there are other laws governing your overall being and breaking any of these laws can manifest in ill health even if you are eating the perfect diet. This brings me to the emotional category.

We all have an unseen emotional or astral body to carry around too and when we feed this body with negativity it can eventually manifest in ill physical health. I like to say the subconscious mind is the mind of our emotional body. If this aspect of our mind is filled with negative emotions and wounded memories we need healing at this level. It all needs to be replaced by healthy food in this case positive emotions.

A lot can be said about the subject of the emotions but I will emphasize only two areas at the emotional level which seem to cause many of us so much pain. I am speaking about hurting someone emotionally or psychologically either by manipulating them, controlling them, psychologically abusing them, or maliciously gossiping about them, slandering them, and backbiting about them (basically sending negative energy their way.) If we practice this we open the door for our eventual ill health, maybe manifesting in a disease.

The key to emotional health and wholeness is to not hurt anyone (or yourself) psychologically or emotionally. Actually this is one of the many manifestations of what love is. However there is a fine line between maliciously hurting someone elses feelings, or hurting them by way of constructive criticism and positive reinforcement. The latter two are for their betterment, but the former is destructive. It all depends upon your motive. Being hard on yourself, or working yourself up into a depression, or even thoughts of suicide, are ways you attack yourself destructively. And this can have an effect on your physical health if you persist in it. There is a fine line between healthy criticism towards oneself, and health destroying hate towards oneself. So not only should we not attack others (maliciously or by way of slandering, backbiting, gossiping etc.), but we should take care not to destroy ourselves emotionally. What we allow into our emotional body is very closely tied in with the mental category, which we will look at next.

Getting into the mind can be a deep subject. The obvious areas of the mind include the conscious and subconscious aspects. The not so obvious area is what has been termed (in spiritual literature) the superconscious level of mind. This latter belongs to the spiritual category but compliments what I will share here about the conscious and subconscious levels of the mind. It is said we have a right half and left half of the brain. Those who are dominantly left brained are said to be more analytical. Those who are mostly right brained are more intuitive and visionary. I will speak more about this in the spiritual category.

In general the conscious aspect of our mind thinks, reasons, and analyzes. It is programmed by its environment, upbringing, education, culture, peer pressure, genes, and so on. The subconscious mind is programmed by conscious influences coming from without, and also by unconscious impressions from the past. It is said we become what we think. Think thoughts of fear, depression, hate, etc, we program that into our subconscious and emotional body, and eventually we become what we think. But also we carry over a lot of unconscious impressions that are already programmed into our subconscious which is why everyone manifests different personality traits, some in need of more healing then others from the get go.

The main emphasis of this mental category is to guard our mind and nip negativity in the bud, not allowing it to enter the interior recesses of our being where it can create havoc or future suffering. Unfortunately sometimes unconscious set ways of thinking creep upon us and we become something we really are not (as far as the spiritual aspect of our being goes).

To be emotionally and mentally healthy and whole means to be spiritually in tune with the highest level of our consciousness, the super consciousness, so that there is a steady flow life and energy from that level of consciousness flowing into our subconscious and conscious levels of mind all the time cleansing and healing them as it is allowed to flow through. The end result is a healthy and whole person, even a new person. This brings me to the last and final category of this article, the spiritual category.

Being spiritual is not to be confused with being religious. Someone who is religious can be operating from a physical, emotional, and mental level only, but be void as far as being spiritual goes. In context of this article being spiritual means living your life from the spiritual level of your being first and foremost. By living from that super conscious level the mind, emotions, and physical health fall into place and are balanced. The esoteric or mystical side of all religions emphasize this same point in so many different words. Yoga and meditation in particular teach someone how to get in touch with the highest aspect of their being.

It is one thing to be trained and programmed from without by books, teachers or what have you. But it is another thing to be nourished and inspired from within from that level of consciousness which is beyond reason, beyond thought. All the confusion in religion happens when people try to be moral, or religious, or ethical or spiritual from the level of their mind, emotions and willpower only. At most the end result is self righteousness or a man made god which is only a dead image or form of the truly spiritual. On the other hand someone who is spiritual is someone who is naturally spiritual by living from that level of consciousness which is above the conscious and subconscious mind, and above what is termed the emotional or astral body.

Those who are mainly right brained often experience glimpses of this level of consciousness and they sometimes try to share what they perceive. Some write, some paint, some sing, and some dance etc. Everyone has their own unique way to bring that light and love to the world which they sense in the silence and stillness when the emotions, reasoning and physical body are calm and collected.

As we spend time to do that which is most important of all overall health and wholeness are the end result, as well as more love towards ourselves and others.

Toning Your Abs - Common Exercising Myths

1. The 'Chew Then Crunch' Myth

Crunches are good exercises for toning the abs and stomach if done properly and combined with a low fat diet. However many people think they can continue to eat what they want and end their day with 100 crunches to "work off" all the bad stuff they put in their body throughout the day.

If you're not lowering your fat intake by watching what you eat, it doesn't matter how many exercises and crunches you perform. Not only will you see zero results, but you may actually see your stomach increase in size!

This is because you're building muscle underneath the existing fat. We all have flat stomachs, it's just that some have layers and layers of fat on top of that muscle we must get rid of first.

You've got to work off that existing fat first by training and toning your abs and stomach area.

I had this problem when I first started exercising. I didn't lower my caloric or fat intake much but I started doing crunches. For three months straight I did my 8-minute ab routine like clockwork. I couldn't understand why I wasn't seeing results. In fact, my stomach started protruding even more.

Well after doing lots of reading I discovered that I was going to also change my diet if I was going to see the results I wanted.

2. The Numbers Myth

Twenty-five good, quality crunches are much better than 250 half-done crunches. Many people just want to get it over with so they lie down and do as many fast crunches as they can while lacking in quality.

The best thing to do is perform 4 sets of 20-25 solid crunches while resting 90 seconds in between each set. That is a much more effective way of training your abs than 250 lackluster crunches in a row.

3. The Spot Toning Myth

This is the one that frustrates me. I have always been very thin and recently started gaining weight in my hips and thigh area. I welcomed the added pounds because it gave me a curvier figure. Unfortunately it also left we with a slightly flabby stomach.

I wanted to keep the hips and thighs but lose the stomach so I started exercising my stomach and abs by doing pilates and crunches.

Well, I didn't see any results. I discovered through reading that you can't just spot tone because if you only focus on one area (ie. your tummy), you won't raise your metabolism enough to burn that extra belly fat. So the key to flattening your stomach area is to increase your body's metabolism so it can effectively get rid of those layers of excess tummy fat.

A total body exercise is the key to slimming your waistline.

4. The Six Pack Myth

Whether you're a man or woman, we'd all love to have that solid six pack to show off when we're at the pool right? Well, what most people don't realize is that solid abs don't start in the gym, they start in the kitchen. If your body contains a lot of fat, your abs won't show no matter how much you exercise.

Your first goal should be to lose that fat, and it starts with your diet. Decrease the amount of fat and calories you consume and increase the amount of protein. Protein is an absolute necessity for ridding fat and building muscle.

5. The Running Myth

Did you know that running does very little when it comes to toning your stomach? This is because it can cause your pelvis to pull forward and arching of your lower back.

Don't get me wrong, running is good for you and can burn a lot of calories, but if you aren't doing any other stomach toning exercises in conjunction with running you'll see little if any results.

Hopefully you've learned that flattening your stomach is not about doing 100 crunches per day. It's about total body fitness and changing your overall diet.
